Will my insurance company make me repipe?
Some Florida insurers decline or non-renew homes with polybutylene or other problem plumbing, or ask for a four-point inspection. Citizens Property Insurance told NBC 6 in 2023 that it does not insure properties with polybutylene piping. Ask your agent exactly what your policy requires, and get it in writing before you schedule work. (Source: NBC 6 South Florida, March 13, 2023)
How much does it cost to repipe a house in Tampa?
Angi's Tampa guide, updated May 27, 2026, puts the typical range at $1,514 to $15,135, with most homeowners paying around $7,568. How long does a whole-home repipe take?
Contractors in Tampa Bay often quote one to three days of plumbing work for a typical house, plus time for the permit, inspection and wall patching. Larger homes take longer.
Do I have to move out during a repipe?
Usually not. Many crews restore water at the end of each workday. Expect noise, covered furniture and work areas in closets, ceilings and walls near fixtures.
How do I know if I have polybutylene?
Look at exposed pipe at the water heater and under sinks. Polybutylene is usually gray, flexible plastic, often stamped PB2110. It was common in homes built from about 1978 to 1995. A licensed plumber or inspector can confirm it. See polybutylene replacement.
Should I choose PEX or copper?
PEX is flexible tubing that usually costs less and needs fewer fittings. Copper has a long track record and usually costs more. Angi's Tampa guide lists PEX at about $1 to $2 per linear foot and copper at about $2 to $8 for materials. (Source: Angi, Tampa repipe cost guide, updated May 27, 2026)
Do I need a permit to repipe?
In most cases, yes. Hillsborough County, for example, lists replacement of water supply piping among repairs that need a permit. Your licensed contractor should pull the permit and schedule the inspection. (Source: Hillsborough County, work exempt from permits)
Who does the work?
Independent, licensed local plumbing contractors. Repiping Tampa Bay connects homeowners with them and does not perform plumbing work. The contractor provides the estimate, permit, work and warranty. You can check a Florida license with the state's DBPR license search.
